Northcote fire questions safety of smart meters – Emergency Services

May 19th, 2012

A FAMILY’S narrow escape from a Northcote house fire prompted a Darebin officer to raise concerns about smart meter installation.

Christmas St resident Sophie Tzirozidis hailed her 12-year-old son a hero after he ran to the front of their house, stopped traffic and alerted neighbours to help evacuate his grandfather, Peter, and grandmother, Vicki, before they were overcome with smoke.

“If Peter hadn’t have come running out screaming for help my parents would have died from smoke inhalation because my father’s had a stroke and he can’t walk and my mother couldn’t move because she was in shock,” Ms Tzirozidis said.

“The fire started from the smart meter and the flames spread straight up to the roof.

“There’s nothing smart about smart meters – they’re terrible.”

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade estimated the damage at $300,000.

One brigade officer, who refused to be named because he was opening “a political can of worms”, said this was the third serious fire in Northcote he’d attended in the past six months that started at the smart meter.

He said the power companies were involved in “a massive cover-up” denying responsibility.

“The problem is not with the meter itself but with connecting it to wiring in older houses,” the officer said.

“Unless something’s done (to fix the problem), unfortunately we’ll see a lot more of these fires and we just have to hope no one will get hurt.”

The MFB officer said he’d repeatedly watched power company authorities visiting the houses after the fires and claiming sabotage or other factors were involved to take the heat off them.

Door County Senior Squadron showcases CAP in Emergency …

May 19th, 2012

1st Lt Paul Spanbauer (l), administrative officer and Capt. Hans Shin (r), commander for the Door County Senior Squadron, introduce a young visitor to the cockpit of a CAP plane during Emergency Services Day at the Door County Cherryland Airport.

Sturgeon Bay - On Sunday, May 13, Civil Air Patrol’s Door County Senior Squadron participated in the third annual Door County Emergency Services Day held at the Door County Cherryland Airport in Sturgeon Bay.

The event is designed to give the public an introduction to the emergency service providers in the county.  Representatives from the Door County Sheriff’s department, several local fire departments, Army National Guard, Coast Guard, Department of Natural Resources and Red Cross were on hand to showcase their equipment and organizations.

A CAP Cessna 182, normally based in Green Bay was on display for visitors to enjoy.  The Army National Guard brought a Blackhawk helicopter while the Brown County Rescue flew in the Eagle III helicopter.

Young visitors were able to sit in the driver’s seat of fire trucks, ambulances, police cars and aircraft.  Being able to explore the equipment and aircraft was a highlight for many.

In addition to the C-182, Major Ron Marto, safety officer for the unit, brought a large model of a C-172 painted with distinctive CAP colors for static display.  Visitors also had the opportunity to “fly” a CAP C-172 using the Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The event was an opportunity to introduce CAP’s activities and capabilities to the general public.  Participation in this event has helped the squadron with recruiting several prospective members in the past.  Just as important, CAP has also strengthened ties with other emergency service providers in the county.

The squadron has participated in this event since its inception.

Severe weather exercise held | Rick Kupchella's …

May 16th, 2012

Mdewakanton Emergency Services recently held a Table Top Exercise for Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community government staff to learn about what to do in a severe weather situation. The goal of the exercise was to strengthen the awareness, needs and capabilities of individual departments and responding resources during a severe weather incident. Participants were asked to consider where their staff might be and how to account for them and where to go in the event of a tornado or other weather emergency. Small group discussions were part of the exercise which featured photos and discussion of warnings versus watches and the various strengths of tornados according to the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF0-EF5.

“Table Top” exercise are a commonly used training device where staff strategize the response in a group discussion. The scenarios are assumed to be real and plausible, and the scripts are designed to be relatively realistic. Resources available are the ones used on a day-to-day basis. Sometimes real situations in the news or extrapolations of real incidents are used.

The goal of the exercises is to coordinate decision-making in a crisis. Given a scenario the participants identify the procedure for dealing with the situation and the proper tactics to manage and minimize impact to Community members, guests and employees. Participants are given what are called “Data Injects” like what happens next, how do guests respond, where personnel are located, and what do they do. SMSC Director of Emergency Services Jim Muelken led the training which was attended by about 30 participants. A similar exercise was also held with Gaming Enterprise staff.

Mdewakanton Emergency Services, a full-time, professional fire department staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is owned and operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, a federally recognized Indian Tribe in Minnesota. The department provides services not only for residents and guests of the reservation, but also to nearby fire and ambulance departments through mutual aid agreements. MES responds to an average of 120 medical, fire, and emergency calls and transports an average of 60 patients each month.

The Mdewakanton Emergency Services Department administers the Mdewakanton LIFE program which donates defibrillators to charitable organizations, law enforcement programs, tribes, fire departments, and schools and provides free training on their use. Organizations in need of an AED may write a letter to the SMSC Business Council and mail it to Mdewakanton LIFE Program, Mdewakanton Emergency Services, 2330 Sioux Trail NW, Prior Lake, Minnesota 55372. Inquiries may be made to 952-233-1077. A form can also be downloaded at www.mdefire.org.

The county and city police agencies that we serve here in Clark County include:

Tomorrow, our Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony will be held 11 a.m.
Thursday in the courtyard of the Clark County Public Service Center at
13th and Franklin streets in downtown Vancouver.

All regional law enforcement agencies will be represented at the
ceremony, which will include the posting of the colors and a 21-gun
salute. State Representative, Ann Rivers, from La Center, will give the address.  Portland Police Highland Guard Bagpipers will perform.

Two law
enforcement officers from Washington, three from Oregon and 163 across
the country were killed in the line of duty in 2011, according to a
sheriff’s office release.

The following poem is entitled, “Our Friends in Blue” and helps us beautifully say both today and always how proud we are of all of the men and women who serve and protect our communities.  Take a moment to reflect, with us, on the great folks who commit their lives to protect ours.
